Coming off of its highest rated Monday of the season, the CW announced today that it will air all-original episodes of three series Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and new drama Life UneXpected on Monday nights from mid-January through May 2010. That means no repeats! The three series will air on a revolving schedule. The Shiry Appleby-led Life UneXpected will debut on Monday, January 18th at 9pm following the return of original episodes of veteran drama One Tree Hill at 8pm. On March 8th, Life Unexpected will take One Tree Hill’s timeslot at 8pm and Gossip Girl will return from its winter hiatus at 9pm ET. On April 19th, after Life UneXpected’s initial 13-episode run is complete, the Monday night schedule will return to One Tree Hill at 8pm and Gossip Girl at 9pm for the remainder of the season.

The Monday midseason rotation will be as follows:
January 18 – March 1
8:00 PM -9:00 PM One Tree Hill
9:00 PM – 10:00 PM Life UneXpected

March 8 – April 12
8:00 PM -9:00 PM Life UneXpected

Can Gossip Girl handle another lengthy midseason break? It’ll be interesting to see how the show creatively responds to such a long hiatus. It certainly is wise of the CW to put new series Life UneXpected on the network’s strongest night, but you have to wonder why the CW has such trouble filling only 10 hours of original primetime programming each week. {source}

Monty in New Mexico: What’s next on Gossip Girl?

I’m told that after tonight’s threeway, everything will be very messy for Dan, Olivia and Vanessa. “Things are not well,” says my source, and the threesome will have repercussions for all relationships involved, and we’ll see it all play out next week via flashbacks of the dirty deeds that were done dirt cheap. Also next week, a fourth wheel comes into the mix: Lady Gaga! No, she’s not actually hitting the sack for an L-O-V-D foursome (can you imagine?), but her music is the catalyst through which Dan, Olivia and Vanessa have to stay connected and work together even more closely for the time being (thanks to an assignment given to Mr. Humpey…or, make that Humphrey, sorry).
Oh, and for all of you who are sooo tired of hearing about the ménage à trois—can we all just have a cigarette and get cab fare already and be on our merry way?—I have this news to share: A main Gossip Girl character is going to get in a serious accident. One that will send her to the hospital. And that someone is Serena (Blake Lively).

"I was recently watching a lot of Bette Davis movies, like All About Eve," says Leighton with a sly smile. "She's so fabulous, over-the-top and amazing. I relate to her a lot."

That says it all.

Leighton definitely has got that classy sex appeal, but the girl has some seriously potent pipes too! On her new single with Robin Thicke, "Somebody to Love," she belts out an unforgettable pop chorus over hypnotic Euro-inspired synths. It's bound to make asses shake across the globe. Think Bette Davis meets Madonna in the hottest chic club, and you're halfway there…

Leighton sat down with ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino in this exclusive interview to discuss "Somebody to Love," her love for silent film and the difference between love and sex. Check out "Somebody to Love" now!

Were you trying to find a middle ground between sexy and poppy on "Somebody to Love?"

Yeah! I was freaking out because somebody told me that it reminded them of "Vogue" a little bit. It's a very sexy record. To me, it honestly sounds like Kylie Minogue meets Gwen Stefani and some other totally different thing [Laughs]. It's very poppy but Euro-sounding.

That's apparent on the production and the synths. Was incorporating the European influences a conscious decision from the beginning?

I'm very influenced by that sound. I love music that's moody. It's not a super hard-hitting song. It's more of a laidback, vibed-out track. That's very sexy to me.

Do songs typically happen immediately or do you spend a lot of time thinking of melodies and ideas?

I come up with melodies all day—every minute. I wake up in the middle of the night with ideas and have to record them [Laughs]. I come up with different stuff all of the time. I just have a lot of fun in the studio. There's always a good vibe. I tweak my ideas a lot, but I love the process. I usually just write after a melody, and everything else comes naturally. I love making lyrically driven songs, but my songs are generally very simple. There's usually a certain vibe while I'm recording. I have a drink, run in and out of the booth and freestyle a bunch of stuff. "Somebody to Love" came about while I was in a Brooklyn studio. I heard this track and, afterwards, I was sitting in the garden thinking. It's so funny because I always get love confused with sex, so the song is really about my struggle to get some [Laughs]. My mom always told me, "It's not about who loves you; it's about who you love." Of course she probably says that because she's my mom and she thinks everyone is going to love me [Laughs]. It's a crazy life. It's hard to find somebody who understands you and gets you.

So there are a few levels to "Somebody to Love?"

Yeah! I think it's somewhat about my sexuality. I draw from a lot of experiences. I love traveling, and I'm working all the time. That's definitely what a good part of the song is about. I don't really have a lot of time for love. I meet a lot of people and none of them do it for me.

How did the collaboration with Robin Thicke come about?

That is amazing [Laughs]! That's like the best part of the song. He ended up hearing the song, and he wanted to vibe out on it. He got into the studio and sang a little bit. Then I was like, "It's so good. I want you to sing an entire verse." So he ended up singing a whole verse, and it ended up amazing. He's so soulful. I've been a fan of his for a very long time so I'm very lucky.

If this record were a movie what would it be?

I feel like it would be a French film from the 1960s starring Brigitte Bardot. It's very sensual, and it captures a feeling of restlessness and my boredom with men. I think that could certainly be conveyed that way.

Do acting and singing come from the same creative place for you?

They're very, very different. It's so funny because I never paid attention to the business side of film or television at all. I've gotten lucky with my label. They allow me to be 100 percent creative with the music, but it's a completely different business from movies. The people operate on totally different hours, which is really funny. However, it's very enjoyable because you get to start and go later in music. I've been writing music since I was 16, and I really started recording and getting more serious about it four years ago. I luckily met a friend through acting that helped. I was doing a movie with my DJ, Shahine Ezell. He's a producer, and he had a studio in his apartment at the time. We wrote this really funny song one night. The next day we listened to it, and we were like, "This is actually really good." Singing is so different from writing. It's a lot like acting because of the performance aspect. I feel like they're two completely different things but they complement each other.

"Somebody to Love" feels like it's ready to be played live too.

Totally! It's going to be so exciting to hear remixes too. It's the music that I like to listen to. It's music for women, but I think it transcends. I like to listen to it in the car or when I'm getting ready. If you go out and you're in a club, I think it'd be really hot to hear this song because it's so moody and it still moves. On stage, it'll be fabulous.

Where else do you draw inspiration from?

I really love silent film. It has such an old-world feel and for some reason I envision a silent film when I hear this song and this is the music that's narrating it. Movies really do inspire me.

Is this record the most personal thing you've ever done?

Oh absolutely! It's completely different. People don't get to see that side of you so much, and I can never convey it properly in interviews. When you make music for the sake of making music, it's easy to have fun doing it. I think it'll translate really well to people because I really believe in it and I love it. I believe in it very much, and it's the kind of music that I like to listen to.

In case you didn't know, Leighton Meester is a singer-songwriter and has a new single out called 'Somebody to Love,' which features Robin Thicke. And we found out she's far different from the awesome, uptight beyotch she plays on 'Gossip Girl.'

Meester talked to PopEater about releasing her own music, what it's been like working on an album and transitioning from actress to singer.

Tell me about your new single 'Somebody to Love.'

I wrote this song earlier this year and Robin Thicke ended up coming in a little bit later once the song was done, which I'm so thankful for and it's really hot. It just makes the song that much better. And I've always been a huge fan of his for so long and I'm very very lucky. [This song is] just so my type of music. I love how it feels like the night to me. It feels like sexy and it's a perfect reflection of what my life is like. I was making a joke, because so much of the time I confuse love with sex and my whole song is about how I can't get any.

When you write your songs, do you draw from your own experiences?

Yeah, I think that's how it should be ... I like to write songs that are fun. But I think this song is such a different vibe because there's a mood to it and I'm inspired by love and my own love life and my friends and sexuality. And I really love going around the world and traveling and this song has definitely the Parisian feel ... It's somewhat introspective, but it's of course an anthem.

What was it like working with Robin Thicke?

First he just sang kind of a little bit just to vibe on it. But I guess that one of the producers sent it to him and he ended up liking it and he ended up singing a little bit on it. And I was like "Look, I love him so much, I want him to do a whole verse." So he ended up doing a whole verse and it's like I think one of the best parts of the song, he's so soulful.

You're in the process of putting together your first album, how has that experience treated you?

Fun. It's been fun. It's weird because I feel like I've been working on it for so long. I've been writing since I was 16-years-old and I've been recording this for about three, going on four years now. And then I've been actually seriously in the studio for about two years and then I got with Universal, so that opened up a whole lot more for me. It's weird because you go through a whole process. I think one of the most fun things is writing and singing in the studio and just vibing out. I mean it's the best times for me. But then now ... it's a completely different thing to just let it go. You know? Just let it live and put it out. I'm really excited for people to hear it because I think knowing that side of me will definitely open up a lot for people to understand where I'm coming from ... And it's also really fun, you know? Mostly what I do in the studio is order food and have a drink. It's like home. So it's very fun and a lot of what I write about is of course, a lot of my songs are about this time of my life which is really fun and exciting and non-stop. And that's a lot of what 'Somebody to Love' is about. A lot of is like, get drunk, get crazy.

At what point did you realize you wanted to be a singer-songwriter?

I've always sung, growing up I always was singing. There was definitely a point where I decided that was something I didn't want to do, I had to do. It was when I started recording. I met my DJ. I met him because we were making a movie together, actually. It's so funny how that happened. But we ended up recording some silly little song ... we recorded in his house. And the next day we were just hanging out and we listened to it and it was good and I was like 'All right, I'm going to think about doing this.' So we just started writing and making music together and then it all grew from there, so that's when I realized that that was what I wanted to do. And of course, it's a very different thing to be like 'Well I want to sign with a label and really make it real and put it out.' Then when this whole thing came about, I was like 'It just makes sense.' And I've gotten to work with the most amazing people, so I'm very lucky.

You had a hit this summer with Cobra Starship – 'Good Girls Go Bad – which was nominated for a VMA. Does that success make it easier right now since you're releasing your own music?

Yeah, it's weird because it's so different when it's you. But still every single time that song comes on the radio, I scream, you can't even hear it. So I never lose that enthusiasm. It's new because it's my own song, so it's definitely different. It was like a good introduction and those guys are amazing, so I was really lucky in that way. They are very encouraging, so I'm happy.

What is the transition like from actress to singer?

It's such a different business. In the acting world ... I don't pay attention to the business aspect at all. I don't have to, I don't want to. And it's the same thing with this side, too. That's what I realized, that's the wonderful thing about having a good label and working with amazing people that you can just focus on being creative and when I act, that's what I do, too. I just focus on that because that's my job. But it is, it's very very different. The hours are different ... I'll have like a 5AM call on set and I'll talk to somebody from music at noon and they'll be like, 'I'm just hanging out the studio' and I'm like 'Lucky you, I've been working for 12 hours already.' But yeah, people go much later in the music business, I do notice that. I think it's just a very different thing, but it's a lot fun.

Do you feel any pressure because you've had success as an actress?

A little bit ... I don't feel much pressure because I believe in it. And I think that it will translate. It's not vanity at all. It really is a love of music and nurturing that side. I want to entertain. I think that a lot of people asked me 'What about being an actress and going into music?' I don't know what people's perspective of that is, but I think that people do that all the time and it's great. But I never thought, 'I'm an actress who's going to do music.' I've always felt like I was both. And I've been so far very lucky in both. It's just a very different thing.

Who are your musical influences?

I'm very influenced by Madonna, and Debbie Harry. I love Cyndi Lauper. I had a chance to work with her on my show, she's very fun. She's awesome. I love Kylie Minogue and M.I.A. and Santogold and Gwen Stefani. Fergie ... great women, female artists.

How would you describe your musical style?

Eclectic. I think if you had to put it into a category, it's like dance, pop, electro but lyrically driven.

What's next -- just finishing the album?

Yeah. It's so weird because I was saying you have to let it live -- that's what everyone keeps on saying to me, let it live. Which is really funny because I don't really know what that means. But no, I think it's the idea I'm going to see what happens and promote and everything for the single and do a few performances and maybe hopefully do a little mini tour and introduce the rest of my songs. I'll probably spend a little more time in the studio -- just tweak things and see where it all ends up.

Will we ever hear a song of yours on 'Gossip Girl'?

Oh yeah, actually 'Somebody to Love' they are going to play on episode 9. [source]

Leighton called Ryan Tuesday to world premiere the song, and joked the name "Somebody to Love" was a tamer version of the original title involving a particular four letter word.

Leighton also told us she got Robin Thicke to jump on the record a couple months after she had initially recorded it.

"I really wanted to make something that's completely different from anything that's on the radio right now," said Leighton. "I feel like it's really dancy and fun, but it's still laid back and relaxed and moody and sexy."

The song hits home for many young adults as Leighton explains, "it's definitely about what's going on in my life and I think anybody can relate. You're crazy, you're busy, you're young and you're running around and it's really hard to find somebody to love. People love you but you don't really love them."

Turns out, losing that "Jersey Boys" gig has worked to my pal Erich Bergen's favor. The former Bob Gaudio and co-producer of "Las Vegas Celebrates The Music of Michael Jackson" begins filming the first of three episodes of the CW hit "Gossip Girl" tomorrow in New York City. Erich's not allowed to say much more about his role other than he appears in scenes with Lady Gaga and Hilary Duff. And that's just the first episode.

Ed Westwick is not allowed to swear—at least not on the record. "I swore too much in Rolling Stone," he cheerfully explains after biting back a particularly lusty f-bomb. "So I'm not supposed to swear in interviews any more."

This refreshingly honest admission is par for the course when it comes to Westwick. With his impish grin and thoroughly forthright demeanor, the actor exudes the effortless sort of charm plenty of his contemporaries would kill for. Unlike so many young thespians, he doesn't seem overly concerned with crafting a crowd-pleasing persona or image. He'd rather immerse himself in the work, have fun with it, and ultimately let it speak for itself.

This seems to be working out pretty well so far. As tortured, manipulative mini-mogul Chuck Bass, Westwick has become the dramatic linchpin—and wildly popular fan favorite—on the CW hit series "Gossip Girl." With his silky line delivery and smoldering stares, the actor manages to convey worlds of meaning in something as simple as a carefully timed eyebrow raise.

Not bad, considering that Chuck Bass, as initially conceived, wasn't supposed to be a major player in the "Gossip Girl" mythos. He is, at best, a sideline supporting character in Cecily von Ziegesar's books on which the show is based, and he spent most of the series' premiere episode glowering, scheming, and being generally evil. "Since Chuck was pretty vilified in the 'Gossip Girl' pilot, we weren't sure that once we were in series, there would be that much for him to do," says show co-creator Stephanie Savage. "You can only tell so many bad-guy stories."

Westwick's multilayered performance, which Savage calls "very cinematic, very 'movie star,' " forced the writers to reconsider. Slowly but surely, Chuck morphed into something far more interesting than a standard TV bad guy.

"Ed is such a likable son of a bitch, he inspired us to really try to redeem the character and pull out some layers," says Savage. "His ability to play Chuck as sympathetic and vulnerable has really encouraged us to show as many colors as possible."

That translated to the addition of Chuck's strict father, a romance with prim leading lady Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), and more exploration of the character's tragic past. For his part, Westwick modestly claims he can't recall doing anything specific to bring Chuck to life; he simply noticed that the role kept getting bigger and bigger over the course of the show's first season. "I don't want to sound arrogant," he says with a grin. "But I'd like to think I made the character my own, and I have tried hard and really enjoyed it and been blessed with brilliant writing. The writers are the ones who, you talk to them and they're like, 'Oh, well, I saw you do something in this scene,' and then they got an idea of where they wanted to take something, and then they write for you, which is great."

Savage says everything Westwick does—from the way he pours a drink to his habit of making Chuck whisper intimately into someone's ear—influences the texture of the character.

"Ed is just completely unique," she says. "He inhabits his character fearlessly and totally commits."

A Fine Piece of Bass

Things weren't quite so rosy when Westwick ventured to Los Angeles from his native England for 2007's fateful pilot season. Though he'd racked up a few solid credits—Anthony Minghella's "Breaking and Entering," the sci-fi drama "Children of Men"—the actor was going through a "dry patch" and had to borrow money from his agent and manager in order to make the trip. "Everything's on a much smaller scale in England, obviously, because it's not Hollywood," he says. "I'd been up on a couple things, and it didn't work out."

When the "Gossip Girl" script came his way, Westwick was instantly impressed by the show's tack-sharp dialogue and fresh take on privileged, status-hungry high schoolers. He initially went out for the role of pretty-boy heartbreaker Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), but Chuck proved to be a much better fit. "I think when I got in, they were like, 'This is not the look we wanted,' " Westwick says with a chuckle. "I obviously don't have the piercing blue eyes of Mr. Crawford. I read for Chuck in my American accent and my English accent, and luckily they loved it."

Indeed, the producers fell for Westwick immediately, but offering him the part wasn't smooth sailing all the way. Savage notes that when the actor was first cast, he had some issues with his U.K.-to-U.S. work papers. The studio and network insisted the showrunners select a backup choice, "just in case." "We refused," says Savage. "Once we saw him read for Chuck, there was no one else."

Even though the character wasn't very developed in the show's pilot, Westwick immediately saw elements he could sink his actorly teeth into. "Chuck was a witty character," he remembers. "Obnoxious. All the parts of his personality were very potent, I felt. So I was like, 'This is the perfect thing to play with. I can do what I want with it. This is a clown.' And I remember, I had an idea of how I wanted to play it, but there were a lot of spontaneous things in the moment that came in when I was reading. Just gestures and things like that. But it really came as a result of the dialogue, which is spectacular."

Westwick says he continues to place his unwavering trust in the show's writers, who keep coming up with deliciously twisted things for Chuck to do. That said, he'll occasionally offer his input on the various puzzle pieces that make up Chuck Bass—like, say, the character's eye-catching wardrobe, which remains an ever-popular discussion topic with the fans. Over time, his ensembles have evolved from a flamboyant array of ascots, sweater vests, and scarves to a more muted palette of sleek business suits.

"I was telling the wardrobe designer the other day, 'Can we cut down on the layers? 'Cause you love to put me in layers, and it makes me look big,' " says Westwick, laughing. "I was looking at myself on one of the scenes, I think when I was doing some ADR, and I was wearing a shirt, a cardigan, and a coat—and I looked huge. I was like, 'This is not doing me any favors. We gotta cut it down—just a shirt and a jacket. Let's keep it slim.' "

'Breaking' In

Growing up in Stevenage, a small town just outside of London, Westwick never thought of acting as a legit career. "I don't think I ever took it seriously as making a living out of it," he muses. "My friends were builders and tilers. It's just a whole different thing, you know? I didn't have any friends who were into acting; you had to seek it out."

After attending various drama groups as a kid and "messing around in little plays" in school, Westwick joined Great Britain's National Youth Theatre at age 16. This, he says, is when he finally started taking the craft seriously: "I really saw it in a different light and started to enjoy it."

During his stint with the theater, Westwick went on an open audition for "Breaking and Entering," a romantic thriller starring Jude Law, Juliette Binoche, and Robin Wright Penn. At the time, he had no idea what a huge opportunity this was. "I didn't understand; I was just going along," he recalls. "And when I auditioned, I didn't know anything about who was in the movie."

He earned the part of Zoran, a Bosnian immigrant teen, and suddenly found himself thrust into the world of large-scale filmmaking. "That was a break in every sense of the word," he says earnestly. "It was a break of being able to learn so much; it was a break of being able to start to see this as a career and start to take it somewhere. I didn't even know what I was doing. When we were shooting the movie, I was so green. All of a sudden, you're just around movie stars, and you're like 'Well, fuuuuuuck.' But now, looking back on it, man, I realize how little I understood."

Luckily, he was surrounded by consummate professionals like Law, Binoche, Wright Penn, and writer-director Minghella ("The English Patient"). Westwick used the opportunity as a master class of sorts, and to this day he's trying to apply these lessons to his burgeoning career. "I really learned about professionalism on set," he says. "I've been on some sets where people don't shut the fuck up, people don't listen to directors when they're talking, the 1st A.D.s have to shout 25 times to get actors to be quiet. And what you found on 'Breaking and Entering' is everybody [was] silent. Anthony didn't have to raise his voice, and everyone was going for the common goal, you know? It was such a beautiful, beautiful atmosphere to be around and to be able to work in."

The film also helped Westwick land an agent: Michael Emptage at London-based Emptage Hallett, who still reps him today. Though Westwick also works with the L.A. management company Affirmative Entertainment, the actor doesn't feel the need to get himself an American agent just yet. "Everyone's very shocked about that," he says, smiling bemusedly. "But I feel like I've got it covered right now."

Such Great 'Heights'

Indeed, Westwick has a fairly clear idea of where he does—and does not—want his career to go. He assesses projects carefully, making sure he's genuinely thrilled by the work he takes on. "It's got to be something that excites you, something that you really want to be involved with and you really, really, really are going to be able to say, 'I can do my bit to make this something great,' " he explains. "Also, it's just as important what you turn down as what you take."

In that vein, Westwick says he has passed on a few things that weren't quite right for him. He's also wary of being typecast as the Bassian bad boy for the rest of his life. "If it's something where they wanted me to play a bad guy in a school, that wouldn't be right for me, because it would just be regurgitating the same role," he says. "And that's not what it's about. It's about me trying to show people that yes, I've done this, but now I know I can do other things, and I want to do other things."

The actor will have the chance to do just that when he takes on the notoriously difficult role of brooding Heathcliff in Peter Webber's ("Hannibal Rising," "Girl With the Pearl Earring") upcoming adaptation of "Wuthering Heights." Westwick is well-aware that he has very big shoes to fill, but he's trying not to let that freak him out too much. "My mother said to me—'cause it's her favorite book—'You know that Laurence Olivier and Ralph Fiennes did it, don't you? So you better do a good job,' " he says, chuckling and shaking his head. "I was like, 'Great, thank you.' I haven't even started to jump into it, 'cause it's quite a way off at the moment. But it's such an iconic role, and to have the opportunity to jump into a character [where] people have the standard of Laurence Olivier and Ralph Fiennes is incredible."

In the meantime, Westwick is looking to diversify his résumé with roles of all stripes. "It's not about maybe having the lead role in something, but having a small role in a good movie with a great director is ideal," he says. For example, he recently campaigned to do a small bit in an episode of one of his favorite series, Showtime's "Californication." "I was like, 'Please let me do it,' " he recalls. "It's, like, three scenes in one episode."

Being able to take on a variety of personas—no matter how many lines he may or may not have—is of prime importance to Westwick. Perhaps that's why, when asked about people he admires, he names thespians who are generally considered character actors: Gary Oldman, Catherine Keener. Being in this sort of category, he notes, allows you "to express and really play. That's where people really got an opportunity to fully do what they want to do."

That said, don't count out Ed Westwick, Leading Man, just yet. "I think I
can do both," he says, charming grin on full display. "I want to give everything a go."

Desmond Harrington (Jack Bass) to return later this season...

Jack Bass, the devious uncle of Gossip Girl's Chuck (Ed Westwick), is set to return to the show later this season, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

"I will be back this year," says Desmond Harrington, who plays the character. "I think it's episode 15 or 16 where I show back up. It's fun playing Uncle Jack."

When we last saw Jack, he tried to attack Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford), who had taken over Bass Industries for Chuck. Jack was then sent packing back to Australia with a sore jaw after being punched by Chuck.

Harrington, who currently plays Det. Quinn on Dexter, says the producers asked him to come back, but he doesn't yet know the plot details surrounding Jack's return to New York. However, the actor says he hopes to continue making Chuck's life a living hell. "I think, if anything, I am there to screw that kid's life up basically," Harrington says. "I think he might be, out of all the most evil characters the show has ever had on it, the most evil character. He's evil."

JJ: You’ve been attending a few fashion shows this week. When you see a look you like, do you put in a request?
LM: Well, the other night, someone asked me how I dressed myself and I was, like, “My stylist dresses me” but I’d say it’s, like, 80-90% him and the rest is me because I’m very open-minded and we’re always on the same page – just very open-minded and it’s fun.

JJ: You went to a fashion show with Rachel McAdams – how was that?
LM: Altuzarra! Yeah, I met her there and she was nice – [photographers] are always, like, “Can we take a picture together?” but I can’t even describe it. She’s so beautiful in person! Very nice, too.

JJ: How was your Fashion’s Night Out at Bergdorf Goodman?
LM: Yeah, I was working all day long and Alexandre Birman, the shoe designer, I’ve been wearing his shoes a lot – [Logan and I] discovered them and they’re really, really good! I’ve actually been wearing them on the show a lot also. He’s Brazilian and he’s so funny because he and his whole group are Brazilians are so warm and so nice and very sassy. And my stepmother and stepsisters are Brazilian – my dad’s married to a Brazilian woman.

JJ: Do they speak Portuguese?
LM: They speak Portuguese – I know, like, two words because my brother’s baby – he has three children and they’re highly encouraged to speak Spanish, so if I’m going to know any language, it’s going to be Spanish, not Portuguese… and Portuguese is difficult.

JJ: What was it like presenting with Jack Black at the 2009 MTV VMAs?
LM: Lots of fun! He’s really funny. They told me that he was going to be dressed like his character, but… (laughs)

JJ: Where are you with your new album?
LM: It’s hard to say because I’m still working on it so much. I could stop now because I think I have enough material but I’ve come to a point where I’m slowing down. I’m still in the studio all the time working and writing and tweaking but it’s really, really fun.

JJ: Do you have an album title yet?
LM: Yeah, I think I figured it out but I can’t tell you yet. (laughs). Soon!

JJ: If you could encapsulate the essence of your album in one word, what would the word be?

LM: I think that the music itself is very, very fun for the most part. I have a few more ballady, emotional songs. But lyrically, it’s a little more docile – the music is very fun. I guess it’s dance music – it’s electro-driven but it’s still soft.

JJ: Is your leaked song Body Control going to be on the album?

LM: I’m not sure now because obviously somebody leaked it. It kind of sucks, but what can you do? But I was really happy because everyone loves it and I have a Twitter and everybody was always, like, “we love that song!” so it was nice to hear. It kinda did suck that I didn’t have any control over that. I did not have body control over that.

JJ: The next song you leak should be leaked to JustJared.com.
LM: If I ever leaked the music! I don’t know who did it. I think somebody hacked the producer who made the track. It happens all the time, which really sucks, but what are you going to do? [source]

Loved 1992’s Single White Female? Then you’ll love 2010’s Leighton Meester-Minka Kelly thriller, The Roommate. Like Female, Roommate focuses on obsession: The film follows a college freshman (Meester) who develops an unhealthy fascination with her roommate (Kelly). For her role, Meester says she went method, researching mental illness with the help of psychologists and films like 1974’s A Woman Under the Influence.

The actress tried to keep her distance from cast members — and a litter of kittens being used for the film — in order to retain her character’s level of emotional aloofness.

“You would think that that idea of playing somebody who’s out of control or lost touch with reality is somehow fun, but it was to a point of discomfort,” the actress says.

“[My character] is completely delusional and it’s definitely a cause of a chemical imbalance, so that wasn’t the easiest and most enjoyable thing. Even in her most normal moments, she’s genuinely a disturbed person. She had very abnormal wheels turning at all times.”

In 2002, before the blog scene became popular, Cecily von Ziegesar wrote about an anonymous blogger calling herself Gossip Girl, who wrote about the teen socialites of Manhattan. People would send gossip, tips and photos to her and she would post it for the world to see, much like the tabloids do.

Gossip Girl begins with the return of 16-year-old It Girl Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) from boarding school after mysteriously disappearing six months earlier. None of her friends know why she left or came back, but the audience learns that her 14-year-old brother Eric (Connor Paolo) tried to commit suicide, which brought her home.

Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) have been dating since kindergarten. And Serena and Nate slept together right before she ran away to boarding school.

Gossip Girl centers on Serena and Blair’s friendship. Blair is Queen B of the Upper East Side; Serena is the It Girl. Blair’s the bitch; Serena’s the wild child who reformed.

The way relationships come and go, this show would be classified as a teen soap opera, and yet it is a guilty pleasure for many people, no matter the age.

Though the first few episodes centered on the triangle between the girls and their Prince Charming, the show has veered off-course as it enters its third season. The fan and media favorite are Blair and Chuck Bass (British actor Ed Westwick), the Queen and King of the Upper East Side. Money, power, sex and manipulation are how they roll, and after a season and a half of ups and downs, the two are finally together, ready to put high school behind them. Blair is now a freshman at New York University (much to her dislike since being rejected by Yale). Her 18-year-old boyfriend is now CEO of Bass Industries, a billion-dollar real estate company; his father died last season.

Serena’s ex-boyfriend and soon-to-be stepbrother Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) and his best friend Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr) are both heading to NYU, too, much to Blair’s dislike, as Brooklyn natives and the Queen B loath each other. Nate, heir to the Vanderbilt fortune, is attending Columbia. Serena herself is supposed to attend Brown University (Rhode Island), but we know she won’t leave New York. The premiere Monday should explain how this happens, but fans are pretty sure it involves Carter Baizen (Sebastian Stan) and her missing father. Little Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen), Dan’s sister, is a junior at Constance Billard School for Girls. In the finale, Blair named Jenny her successor. So while the older kids are now in college, Jenny and Eric are left in high school alone. We will see how the show ties everything together.

Much like Gossip Girl developer Josh Schwartz’s previous show, The O.C., parents are a central part of the cast. Follow me through this: Dan and Jenny’s father Rufus Humphrey (Matthew Settle) is engaged to his long lost love Lily Bass (Kelly Rutherford), Serena and Eric’s mother and Chuck’s father’s widow. After Bart Bass’s (Robert John Burke) death last season, news came out that Lily was pregnant and gave the child up 20 years ago, when she was a groupie and Rufus was a rock star. The two went in search for their child and the adoptive parents told them he was dead. The audience knows this is untrue and from the finale, we learn that Scott Ronsson (Chris Riggi) has transferred from Boston University to NYU and he’s in search of his birth family.

With college beginning, new characters will be introduced, two of which are played by Hilary Duff and Joanna Garcia. And an old enemy returns. In the finale, we learned that Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) has requested to be roommates with her mortal enemy Blair.

How will Blair survive roommate hell, a school where her social status means nothing and a billion ex-womanizer boyfriend? Will Serena’s wild side finally come out, and is that good or bad? Will college change our favorite teens? Will Jenny be able to handle being queen? Will Lily and Rufus finally survive? What does Scott really want? Find out this Monday on The CW at 9 p.m. [source]

When Zuzanna Szadkowski first auditioned for "Gossip Girl," she never dreamed that one day she'd hear throngs of teenage fans screaming her name. After all, the part she was up for—a demure Polish housekeeper employed by wealthy glamour girl Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester)—had no lines and was relegated mostly to the background, clutching a tray of champagne.

And yet, as the show progressed, the role started to grow. Suddenly the character had a name—Dorota—and an amusing rapport with Blair. Fans took note, declaring their love for Szadkowski on Internet message boards and creating Dorota-centric chat icons. The character became so popular that Szadkowski landed her own spinoff of sorts: a series of mobile and online "Gossip Girl" mini-episodes focusing on Dorota's surprisingly exciting behind-the-scenes life.

Szadkowski says she had some idea that Dorota was becoming a fan favorite, but the full impact didn't really hit until she heard a gaggle of teen girls shrieking for her during a location shoot. "The first time I ever felt cool was when they asked me to sign autographs, and for some reason they were having their iPhones autographed," she says, chuckling. "I was, like, walking around signing people's iPhones. I felt very weird."

It just goes to show: You never know which roles are going to provide the greatest opportunities. A part may not look like much on paper, but if you invest yourself fully and viewers sit up and take notice, sometimes it can morph into something greater. "It's like an actor fantasy," Szadkowski says. "You go in, it's a possible recur, and then you get to have this really fun ride and a cool gig. It really blew some doors open for me."

"I don't think a smaller role's any different than a bigger role. You invest in it with all your blood. I certainly don't try to make myself small or avoid taking the moment."

And when you take that approach, you can often find little things in the character to capitalize on. From the get-go, Szadkowski notes, she had a fully formed idea of who Dorota was within Blair's world—a caring maternal figure with lots of unspoken opinions—and used that to inform her performance. "When I was in a scene, I was attempting to engage it full throttle," she says. "The setup, being a serving person in an über-rich universe, it's a lot of fodder for silent reaction—an eye roll here and a smirk there. I was always trying to contribute in the background, and I feel like sometimes the editors would actually use some of my little takes or faces I would make."

In expanding her character for the mini-episodes, Szadkowski says she tried to be mindful of what made Dorota popular in the first place: "On the show, I'm more of a sideline commentator than a direct player. It's very different to be a lead character. I wanted to keep her the same person and to see how that person has fun or has their own love life. It was about, 'How do I play a whole scene and keep all my Dorotaness in effect?'

Szadkowski notes that, perhaps most important, landing the role and seeing it grow has helped her realize that you never can tell which auditions are going to lead to greater things—so you'd best get in the habit of going in with an open mind.

"I feel like, on paper, Dorota was supposed to be an older character, and it could've been anyone," she says. "As actors, we tend to type ourselves out right away: 'Oh, this is the one for me; I better get it. This one's not for me; I better just make a good impression.' This might've not seemed like it was going to be my best gig, and there's no way to foretell. It helps me to be hopeful every time I walk into a room now. I could be exactly what they want, even if it doesn't seem that way to me." [source]
