Elle Korea magazine spread

[July 19th, 10AM New York Chelsea’s Milk Studion 8th floor.]

[10:10AM Photographer arrives. Davis Pecter(sp?). Most interested in the cover shoot.]

10:30AM Staff meeting. The photographer and the Elle team, hair, makeup, manicure, and production team all sat together. They shot the Korean brand Ask’s ads the day before with Ed and Leighton – so aside from the Elle team, the staff knew each other. This shoot’s concept is “dancing couple”. “Instead of a static pose, let’s lead them towards lots of movement.” “Rather than dancing bombastically, how about just ‘movements’?” “For every cut, it’d be good to feel the emotions like love and fight, et cetera.” “While putting a variety of looks on display, we should be singular in the punk elements.” “Because they are not fashion models but celebrities, we should respect their opinions also.” “How about using neutral colors to purple or black in Leighton’s makeup, changing it with the increasing penchant for the stronger colors?” “Let’s bring out the natural texture in the hair.” While these various opinions were exchanged, we all agreed on one thing: Leighton’s nail color.

11AM Leighton and Ed arrived. We greeted Ed first, who was looking at the storyboard/sketches posted up on a wall. Ed was wearing a shirt with stripes and a hat. The first thing we noticed was his firm and masculine chin line. We expected him to have dark eyes for some reason, but in reality he was a polite young man with modest and warm eyes. Leighton looked a tad tired. The filming the night before lasted a long time, and she had more work earlier in the morning.
But she was the type to love immediately once you see her. Small height and tiny face, round and “good” eyes must be the reason. She is sweet, lovable, and chattered away like a little sparrow.

[11:10AM Sketch artist/photographer and VJ arrived. They have worked with Ed and Leighton before.]

[11:30AM Catering.]

12:35PM Before shooting, Ed and Leighton offered opinions while checking out the clothes and trying them on. A lot of Burberry clothes especially had been prepared, and because it worked with this shoot’s mood we used a lot of them. Ed began first because he was ready more quickly.
Once the lights went on and the camera shutters were pressed, he moved nimbly and revealed a variety of emotions.

[1:40PM Lunch. Chicken salad, potatoes, brownies.]

2:40PM Managers reviewed the interview questions, other staff headed to the set again, and
Leighton entered the set appearing mature and strong. While taking a break or fixing her makeup, she always returned to being a pretty girl (the makeup artist whined “Although I want to avoid girlish makeup, I can’t, because of the loveliness that naturally comes out from inside her!”) but she had so much concentration when it came to the shoot.
4:30PM Interview with Ed.
He expressed his thoughts concisely and made humorous comments in between. We felt that he was such a British gentleman.

5:20PM Cover shoot began. Elle’s been being produced in double covers since last May, so we shot two different looks this time around also. Everyone seemed to be really concentrating, including Ed and Leighton. A Burberry ensemble was chosen to work with the story inside the magazine for one cover, and the other was Ask look, for a more preppy take. We changed the look and lighting, and talked to Ed and Leighton about the pose and emotions once more.

6:40PM The shoot ends! Everybody who’s been holding their breaths all smiled brightly and clapped. Took a group picture, and said goodbye to each other – to wrap up, we had to hug! each other tightly. Ah! Leighton stayed. Because she had to do the interview.

6:50PM After changing to casual attire,
Leighton was energetic. The all-day shoot must have been tiring, but somehow she was livelier. Interview with Leighton felt like a chat between girlfriends of similar age, randomly talking about the scene outside the window or bursting out in laughter about the scene on the TV by the wall.
7:30PM With “See you soon”, Leighton left too. [source]
